Privacy policy
Last updated 21 October 2026
- No account, no ads, and we never sell your data.
- Your car screen's video, sound and touches pass through our relay in real time. They are not recorded or stored.
- Payments are handled by Google Play. We never see your card details.
- The app sends anonymous usage and crash data to help us fix problems. You can turn this off in Settings → Privacy.
Who we are
Mapsy is an independent app (the Android app and mapsy.uk). We are the controller of the personal data described here. Contact us at support@mapsy.uk.
What Mapsy handles, and why
Showing your phone on the car screen
When you tap Start, the Mapsy app runs Android Auto on your phone and streams its screen and sound to your Tesla's browser. Touches on the car screen are sent back to the phone. This passes through our relay server (relay.mapsy.uk) in real time over an encrypted connection. It is not recorded, stored or looked at. While your phone is connected, the relay keeps in memory your car link's code, the keys of the cars you approved, and the latest video frame and settings, so that the car screen starts quickly. Without a subscription, the relay also keeps one number for your car link: how much of your 10 free minutes you've used. Purpose: providing the service you asked for.
Approving your car
The first time a browser opens your car link, the phone asks you to approve it. If you approve, the phone stores that browser's random device ID, its IP address and browser type under Settings → Allowed cars, and the browser stores a key so it can reconnect. You can remove a car there at any time. Purpose: making sure only your car sees your phone.
Your subscription
Subscriptions are sold and billed by Google Play under Google's privacy policy. The app gets a purchase token from Google Play and sends it to our relay, which asks Google whether the subscription is active. The answer is kept in memory for up to 6 hours. We don't receive your name, email or payment details. Purpose: providing the service you paid for.
Usage and crash data (can be turned off)
The app uses PostHog, hosted in the EU, to understand how Mapsy is used and to fix problems. It sends:
- A random ID created when you install the app (not linked to your name, email or Google account).
- Events such as setup steps, starting and stopping, car approvals, subscription steps, and drive quality figures such as frame rate and connection drops.
- Crash and error reports, with technical details of what went wrong.
- Your phone model, Android version and app version.
- Recordings of the Mapsy app's own screens while it is open on your phone (setup, settings, approvals). Your car link, car names and IP addresses are hidden in these recordings. Recording pauses while you are streaming. It never captures the car screen or other apps.
IP addresses are discarded and not stored. We do not collect your location, contacts, messages, or anything you type. Purpose: our legitimate interest in keeping Mapsy working and improving it. You can turn all of this off in the app under Settings → Privacy → Share usage and crash data.
The website (mapsy.uk)
The website uses PostHog in cookieless mode: no cookies are set and IP addresses are not stored. Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) adds the visitor's country, as a two-letter code, so we can see where visitors come from. It counts page visits, clicks on the Google Play button and when a car code is entered (not the code itself). Cloudflare also measures page load speed, without cookies. Your browser remembers the last car code you entered, on that device only. In the car, the browser also stores a random device ID and the key it received when you approved it.
Microphone and Bluetooth
The microphone permission is used only so you can talk to Android Auto ("Hey Google", voice replies). The sound goes from your phone's microphone to Android Auto on your phone, never to us. Bluetooth is used to notice when your phone connects to your Tesla, so Mapsy can offer to start. This stays on your phone.
Server logs
Like any website, our servers keep standard request logs (IP address, browser type, the page or link requested, time) for security and to fix problems.
Android Auto and Google
Mapsy runs Google's Android Auto on your phone, along with the apps you use through it, such as Waze, Google Maps or Spotify. What they do with your data is covered by their own privacy policies.
Who processes the data
| Provider | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Relay between phone and car; the website and car page | Cloudflare's global network, nearest to you |
| PostHog | Usage and crash data, app screen recordings | EU |
| Google Play | Subscriptions and payments |
They process data only on our instructions. Where data leaves the EU, it is protected by the providers' standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Streamed video, sound and touches: not kept.
- Relay memory (connection details, subscription answer): while connected; at most 24 hours.
- Free-minutes count for your car link: until you ask us to delete it.
- Usage events and crash reports: up to 12 months.
- App screen recordings: 30 days.
- Server logs: up to 7 days.
- Data on your phone and in the car's browser: until you remove it, clear the browser data or uninstall the app.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK), you can ask to access, correct or delete your data, object to its use, or ask for a copy. Because Mapsy has no accounts, we can only find usage data if you tell us roughly when and on which phone you used Mapsy; the simplest way to stop it is the switch in Settings → Privacy. Write to support@mapsy.uk. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Deleting your data
To have Mapsy's data about you deleted:
- In the app, turn off Settings → Privacy → Share usage and crash data, so nothing new is sent.
- Email support@mapsy.uk with the subject "Delete my Mapsy data", your phone model, and roughly when you used Mapsy.
- We delete the matching usage events, crash reports and app screen recordings within 30 days and reply to confirm.
Data on your phone (your car link, allowed cars, settings) is deleted when you uninstall the app or clear its storage; data in the car's browser when you clear its browsing data. After you disconnect the relay keeps only the free-minutes count for your car link, which is removed with it when we delete your data; server logs are deleted after 7 days. Your subscription and purchase records are kept by Google Play under its own terms; cancel or manage them in Google Play.
Children
Mapsy is for drivers and is not meant for anyone under 18.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
